The world’s energy needs are continuously changing. As a result, companies are often on the lookout for talented, dedicated and hardworking individuals, often sourced by specialist recruiters such as NES GT.
There are many different job roles within the oil and gas industry, each requiring specific qualifications and abilities, but here are some of the specialist skills needed to work in this sector.
The oil and gas industry is constantly inundated with an endless supply of information which needs to be carefully understood in order to make sensible, logical and economical decisions. The ability to collect, understand, translate and communicate this mass of information is key to success which is why data analysis plays an important role within the sector. Keeping track of complicated and rapidly changing metrics amid a busy environment is not an easy task and therefore requires an analytical mind and a passion for asking questions such as why? What if? And how come?
Executive managers ensure corporate expectations are met. They play a valid role within the oil industry and must be able to implement effective delegation strategies as well as set goals and policies which are in line with industrial handbooks and company regulations. Managers must also have the confidence to interpret data and report findings back to the board. They are largely responsible for the success/failure of a task and must be able to understand and analyse highs and lows of a project.
Many of the roles within the oil and gas industry require a combination of specialist skills which all work in harmony to ensure the job in question is carried out to the highest possible standard. Petroleum engineers, for instance, are charged with designing methods for extracting oil and gas deposits from below the surface of the Earth working alongside geologists to investigate the structure of the planet’s surface and its natural resources.
Both engineers and geologists must therefore have a solid knowledge of geological formation and rock properties to help determined which drilling methods will be most appropriate. Exploration geologists also use a range of geophysical techniques such as seismic and electromagnetic methods to help them on their quest for natural mineral deposits. Once a site has been located, samples from test sites must also be analysed and used to assess any potential extraction risks.
As employees within the gas and oil industry such as engineers are tasked with finding the most profitable ways of gas and oil extraction, they must have impeccable mathematical and computer skills as these coincide with reading and interpreting data. Having a firm grasp of figures and being able to calculate complicated sums under pressure is why many of the roles within the sector are incredibly specialist and require people with the right qualifications including a Bachelor’s Degree in engineering.
The oil and gas industry requires a host of specialist skills with each job role requiring different abilities and qualifications.
