Portland's Pioneering Journeypersons Rock On


Brains and brawn: the perfect storm of professional satisfaction. At least that idea has been the draw for hundreds of young women who have flocked to Oregon Tradeswomen Inc.’s (OTI) pre-apprenticeships. Founded in 1989, the program teaches the trades to women from all over. Given Portland’s demographic reputation as the whitest urban center in the United States, the program does double duty as a gender-and-color-diversity generator for the construction biz, reaching out to those for whom the aggressive gentrification of the popular northwestern city has not been good news; women of color.
