Knoxville Women in Construction Chapter Turns 50

This week, the Knoxville chapter of the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) celebrates its 50th anniversary. The chapter is part of a national organization with 5,500 members whose central goal is the advancement of the cause of women in construction. NAWIC was itself founded by 16 women in 1953 under the name “Women in Construction of Fort Worth.” The local chapter grew so quickly in popularity it gained its national charter and name change in 1955. The Knoxville chapter also participates in Mentoring a Girl in Construction (MAGIC), a nationwide day camp that introduces high-school-age girls to the opportunity to learn about the construction industry.
