Kansas Contractor Has More Business Than She Can Handle. Literally.


Here’s a problem many would love to have. Augusta-based Zernco has had a banner year. In fact the general contractor, which specializes in construction and remodeling of restaurants and convenience stores for national chains (Applebee’s is a big client, for instance), has done so much business that CEO Ashley Thill is turning some business away and taking a breather. The small company of 50 employees did $21 million in business last year and is headed toward a $30 million 2016. The company was founded in 1991 in, yes, a garage, where Thill’s stepfather would do cabinet work for regional clients. Since he surprised her with sudden CEO status in 2011––Thill had previously worked in wealth management for an accounting firm––Zernco has been so wildly successful Thill is tapping the brakes.
